It’s going to be tough to vacation here without a car, but it is doable. I’ve lived here my whole life and have never taken public transportation, but I know of many people who use it all the time and say it’s reliable. I think it’s going to require some patience and studying of the timetables and maps to get the hang of it.

If I were you, I’d try to stay somewhere like Santa Monica that has a lot of great activities within a manageable walking distance. There are also several tourist info centers in this area, so they can help you out. Plus, from what I’ve heard, the Big Blue Bus, the bus system for SM, is a bit easier to navigate than the one for Metro LA.

If you base yourself in SM you can see the beaches, the pier, the 3rd St. Promenade, Main Street and the lovely Sunday Farmers Market with a lot of foot work (or rent bikes), and Abbott Kinney and Venice Beach, and the wonderful Getty Villa in Malibu (get tickets in advance online for free) have more direct routes by bus from there. Plus, it’s a whole lot prettier than someplace like Hollywood. Depending on how many of you there are and your budget, I’d probably just take a taxi to BH, the Sunset Strip or Hollywood.

You can also take the Amtrak train to San Diego or Santa Barbara for a short side trip. Both trains run along the water part of the way there.

Have fun! Oh, bring your umbrella! We don’t get a ton of rain in LA, but late March, early April does get more showers than other months.

You really need a car in LA. We just got back from vacationing there. You might want to stay at the Hollywood Boulevard Holiday Inn which is in walking distance of the Grauman Theater and a mall, and there are lots of tour buses by the theater. If you want to go out to other areas, it could be very time consuming without a car. Everything is spread out. DC and NYC are much better bets for someone who doesn’t drive.

the transit system is doable here in Los Angeles
it just helps to know where you want to go and it might
take longer to get there by using transit but then a car
but you will arrive with less stress in the first place
the Metro system also offers a day pass for $5.00
good for the entire system which is a great deal
so it wont be much of a problem if you are staying
anywhere in the LA basin

Check on sight-seeing tour buses, and call, write or e-mail the transit people and see if they can help in your venture of the LA city. Have a great time and enjoy the adventure

It just depends on where you want to go. Most of the “touristy” spots like Disneyland, etc have quasi-adequate public transportation going to them, it just may take some time getting there.

If you’re looking for “out of the way” spots, you’ll have trouble without a car.
